Drama unfolded when Department of State Services agents and Ikoyi Correctional Center agents fought at the Federal High Court in Lagos over who would arrest suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele.
When the case was postponed till November 14 and Emefiele was granted bail by Justice Nicholas Oweibo, some DSS agents were visible in prominent locations and close to the court door.
Emefiele was granted bail on Tuesday in the amount of N20 million by Justice Oweibo after being accused of illegally possessing guns.
Because the defendant was charged with a bailable offense, the judge agreed with the defense attorney’s argument.
The court decided that only when one of the conditions listed in Section 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act was proven true could bail be denied.
The court determined that the prosecution had not provided the court with such circumstances.
The defendant was then granted bail by the court in the amount of N20 million with one surety in the same amount.
According to the court, the surety is required to sign an affidavit of means and own a piece of land.
In the meanwhile, he ordered that the defendant be kept in the care of the penal system.
However, the Ikoyi Prison staff opposed the DSS’s attempts to seize the court grounds and rearrest him, which resulted in a confrontation and the start of fisticuffs.
